Objects in this Unit:

A horizontal piece of cloth decorated with embroidery made from blue and black strings. Blue stitched dots border the upper border and the two sides of the cloth. The stitched dots are also used to separate five lines of embroidered letters, which list out the alphabet in uppercase letters, minus the letter "J." The letters are stitched in blue string. Beneath the letters is the name "BETSY" stitched in black string.
Betsy Philbrick's Sampler
A tall wooden cylinder, that is wider at the bottom than at the top. There is a wooden stick sticking out of the top of the cylinder.
Butter Churn
A vertical piece of light brown fabric with letters, birds, trees, urns, and flowers on it. All of the images are sown on to the fabric in different colored pieces of string. Towards the bottom of the piece of fabric is the sentence: "Hannah Foster her sampler wrought/in the twelfth year of her age A.D 178."
Hannah Foster's Sampler
A vertical piece of cloth decorated with embroidery made from colored strings. There are three bordered rows of stitched letters from the alphabet at the top of the cloth, each completed in different stitching styles and in either upper or lowercase font. At the center of the cloth is the stiched sentence "Laura W Sanborn of New/Chester was born in Sept 5,/1804 aged ten years in 1814." Beneath this are two additional bordered rows of the alphabet. The last row is incomplete, only listing the letters "A" through "E." To the right of the incomplete row of letters is a heart with a crown over each of the humps. Inside the heart is a small tree.

Linen Shirt
A horizontal piece of cloth decorated with embroidery made from colored strings. From top to bottom, there is a border of flowers and vines along the upper border of the cloth; a listing of the alphabet in uppercase letters, minus the letter "J;"  a listing of the numbers one through twelve; a listing of the alphabet in lowercase letters, minus the letter "J;" and the following sentence: "POLLY FOSTER her sample wrought in the thirteenth year/of her Age*A*D*1787*." Beneath all of this are two large birds with long tails standing on either side of an urn with flowers in it. Surrounding this scene are several other small birds, flowers, and trees.

Merchants' Docks
