Biography

Abel Crawford

circa 1766–1851

Caption:

Abel Crawford moved to the White Mountains in 1790 and spent the rest of his life promoting the mountain region. At the time, very few people lived there, but he and his father-in-law, Eleazer Rosebrook, both opened inns near a pass in the mountains where travelers could cross the mountains. The pass was originally called the Notch, but now it is known as Crawford Notch after the Crawford family. Abel loved the mountains and explored them more than anyone else had done at that point. He was known for telling wild stories about what he found in the White Mountains, including tales of encountering bears and other animals. With his son Ethan Allen Crawford and other family members, Abel built taverns and inns where tourists could stay, cut hiking trails through the mountains, and led guided tours to interesting noteworthy places.

Biography

Alan Shepard

1923–1998

Caption:

Alan Shepard was the first American to go to space. He was born and grew up in Derry, New Hampshire, and graduated from Pinkerton Academy. His middle name was Bartlett and he was related to Josiah Bartlett, who signed the Declaration of Independence for New Hampshire. Shepard served in the navy during World War II. After the war, he became a test pilot. Test pilots try out new aircraft and make sure they are safe. In 1959, Shepard was chosen to be in the first group of American astronauts, known as the Mercury Project. On May 5, 1961, he flew into space for 15 minutes and 28 seconds. He returned safely to Earth and continued working for the space program. In 1971, he went to space again. He led the Apollo 14 mission, which landed on the moon. Shepard got to walk on the moon and even hit a few golf balls while he was up there!

Biography

Alice Cosgrove

1909–1971

Caption:

Alice Cosgrove was a New Hampshire artist. She was born and went to school in Concord, New Hampshire. Later she studied at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In the 1950s and 1960s, she was the official state artist of New Hampshire. She designed everything printed by the state that any sort of image on it, like posters, brochures, signs, and maps. She is known for creating the character of Chippa Granite to promote New Hampshire’s tourism and agriculture. Chippa became a friendly symbol of the Granite State for people all over the world. Cosgrove also drew and painted portraits, and designed the New Hampshire Marine Memorial at Hampton Beach. This statue is in memory of the servicemen and women from New Hampshire who have died at sea.

Armenia White

1817–1916

Caption:

Armenia White was an important reformer in New Hampshire in the 19th century. She was an abolitionist, which means she worked to end slavery. She also fought for women’s rights, such as the right to vote. She wrote letters, gave speeches, and tried to persuade politicians to pass laws to fix society’s problems. Armenia White was wealthy, so she was able to donate a lot of money to support these causes. She and her family also donated money to arts and cultural organizations, especially in their hometown of Concord, New Hampshire. Thanks in part to Armenia White, American women got the right to vote in 1920.

Biography

Benjamin Champney

1817–1907

Caption:

One of America’s most famous 19th-century artists, Benjamin Champney was born in New Ipswich, New Hampshire. As an adult, he lived in North Conway, where he kept an artist’s studio. Benjamin loved the White Mountains and made many sketches and paintings of the natural world. These types of paintings are called landscape paintings because they focus on the land around us. Benjamin’s White Mountain paintings were very popular, and many tourists bought them, taking them to their homes in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. But not just tourists were impressed with Benjamin’s beautiful landscape paintings. Other artists were as well, and they came from all over the country to visit him at his North Conway studio to learn about painting the natural world.

Biography

Benning Wentworth

1696–1770

Caption:

Benning Wentworth was New Hampshire’s first colonial governor. His family were wealthy merchants who lived in Portsmouth and were also political leaders. In 1740, the king of England decided that New Hampshire should have its own governor. Up until then, New Hampshire shared a governor with Massachusetts. The king chose Benning Wentworth to be New Hampshire’s governor. While he was governor, Wentworth helped to establish a lot of towns in New Hampshire. He made money by selling land throughout New Hampshire, and he gave a lot of land and government jobs to his relatives. But he also helped to make sure that the new towns were self-sufficient and governed themselves through town meetings. Eventually, the colonists in New Hampshire got tired of how Benning Wentworth and his family kept getting richer and more powerful. He also got in trouble for selling land that actually belonged to New York, so he had to resign. His nephew, John Wentworth, became the next colonial governor.

Bill Gardner

1948–Present

Caption:

Bill Gardner became the New Hampshire secretary of state in 1976. He retired in 2022 and was the longest-serving secretary of state in American history. The secretary of state's job is to run all of the elections in New Hampshire. They also make sure that everyone follows the election laws. Gardner believed that the New Hampshire primary is a really important tradition. For almost 50 years, he picked the date for the New Hampshire primary. He always made sure it was the first one!

Biography

Celia Laighton Thaxter

1835–1894

Caption:

Celia grew up on the Isles of Shoals where her father, Thomas Laighton, was a lighthouse keeper and the owner of the first hotel on the islands. It was called the Appledore House, and it opened in 1848. Celia moved to Massachusetts when she married Levi Thaxter, but she came back to the Isles of Shoals often. She wrote many poems and stories about her life on the Isles of Shoals and published them in magazines and books. She was also an artist and drew many pictures of wildlife, particularly flowers, on the islands. Celia grew a beautiful garden near her cottage in the Isles of Shoals. It was the inspiration for her book, An Island Garden. The book included illustrations by the famous painter Childe Hassam. Celia became one of America’s most popular authors during the late 19th century.

Christa McAuliffe

1948–1986

Caption:

Christa McAuliffe was a social studies teacher at Concord High School in New Hampshire. In 1985, she was chosen by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) to be the first Teacher in Space. Over 11,000 people applied to the program! McAuliffe trained as an astronaut and joined the crew of the space shuttle Challenger. She planned to conduct science experiments and teach lessons about space travel from space. Tragically, the Challenger exploded shortly after takeoff on January 28, 1986. McAuliffe and the other six crew members died. People remember her for her love of teaching and her enthusiasm. She often said, “I touch the future—I teach.”

Biography

Daniel Webster

1782–1852

Caption:

Daniel Webster was one of the most important American politicians of the 19th century. He was known as “the Great Orator,” because he was a talented public speaker. He was very good at convincing people of his point of view. Webster grew up in Salisbury, New Hampshire, in a part of the town that is now the city of Franklin. He graduated from Dartmouth College and became a lawyer. In 1819, he won a very important court case for Dartmouth College. He also represented New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives. Later he moved to Massachusetts, and was elected a U.S. Senator. He was also the U.S. Secretary of State, a very important job. As the country became more and more divided over the issue of slavery, Webster tried to keep the union together by suggesting compromises. His statue is in front of the New Hampshire State House.

Biography

David Thomson

circa 1592–1628

Caption:

David Thomson (sometimes spelled Thompson) founded the first permanent English settlement in New Hampshire, at what is now called Odiorne’s Point in Rye. Starting when he was still a boy, Thomson sailed to New England several times. He decided that the area near the Piscataqua River would be a good place to build a settlement. In 1623, he convinced a group of English businessmen to hire him to set up a year-round fishing station there. The settlers were supposed to send a lot of fish back to England to make money for the businessmen. They were also supposed to farm and set up a trading post. At first there were only 10 or 20 settlers, and they built a fort, some houses, and buildings to process the fish. In 1626, Thomson and his family moved to an island in Boston Harbor, called Thompson Island today. He died a few years later.

Dean Kamen

1951–

Caption:

Dean Kamen is an inventor, engineer, and businessman from New Hampshire. He is best known for inventing the Segway, but he has invented a lot of other things too, especially in the medical field. In the 1980s Kamen bought up some of the empty buildings in the Manchester Millyard and used them for laboratory and office space for his company, DEKA. This brought other companies into the Millyard and helped improve the neighborhood. Kamen launched the Segway, a personal transportation device, in 2001. He also invented an all-terrain electric wheelchair called the iBOT, a portable system to purify water, a machine to help people with kidney problems, and a special type of prosthetic, or artificial, arm. Kamen is also one of the founders of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, which is in schools all over the country. Have you ever participated in a FIRST Lego League Challenge or Robotics Competition?

Biography

Donald Hall

1928–2018

Caption:

Donald Hall was an important author from New Hampshire. He wrote poetry, fiction, children’s stories, biographies, plays, and essays. He was also a Red Sox fan and wrote two books about baseball! You might have read one of his children’s books, Ox-Cart Man. Hall lived for many years on Eagle Pond Farm in Wilmot, New Hampshire. The farm had been in his family since the 1860s. Hall often wrote about rural life in New Hampshire. He was the poet laureate, or the official poet, of New Hampshire from 1984 to 1989 and the poet laureate of the United States from 2006 to 2007.

Biography

Edward Cross

1832–1863

Caption:

Colonel Edward Cross was one of the hardest-fighting, toughest officers in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. He was originally a journalist from Lancaster, New Hampshire. Later he moved to Arizona, where he ran a newspaper. When the Civil War began in 1861, he returned to New Hampshire to fight in the Union Army. He commanded the Fifth N.H. Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which became known as the “Fighting Fifth.” Colonel Cross led his troops in some of the hardest battles of the war. More soldiers died in the Fifth New Hampshire than in any other Union regiment. Cross himself was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863.

Edward Hilton

1596–1670

Caption:

Edward Hilton and his brother, William, founded one of New Hampshire’s first four English towns, Dover. The Hilton brothers were fishmongers in London, England. They came to New Hampshire with David Thomson as part of his fishing settlement, but the Hilton brothers set up their own fishing operation on the Piscataqua River in 1623, which they named Hilton’s Point. Most people called this settlement Cocheco, after the Abenaki name for the area. It eventually became known as Dover.

Ernest Balch

Caption:

Ernest Balch was a student at Dartmouth College when he got the idea to start a summer camp for boys. He founded Camp Chocorua in the Lakes Region in the summer of 1881. Most of the boys who came to the camp were wealthy boys who lived in big cities, like Boston, New York, or Washington, D.C. Ernest Balch wanted them to learn to be self-reliant and to enjoy nature, which he didn’t think they could do while living in big cities. The boys were expected to take care of themselves while at camp. They cut their own firewood, cooked their own food, washed their own clothes, and were responsible for keeping the camp clean. But there was still plenty of time for fun! Camp Chocorua closed in 1889, and Ernest Balch moved to South America.

Ethan Allen Crawford

circa 1792–1846

Caption:

The son of White Mountain explorer Abel Crawford, Ethan Allen Crawford helped develop the White Mountains as a tourist destination. Ethan Allen ran a hotel named the Crawford House, which offered tourists a nice place to stay when they visited the White Mountains. He also cut the first hiking trail to the summit of Mount Washington, naming it the Crawford Path. He helped write guidebooks about the mountains and placed advertisements in newspapers encouraging people to visit. An experienced mountain man, Ethan Allen loved to tell tall tales about life in the White Mountains, just like his father did. Many things in the White Mountains are named after Ethan Allen and his family, since they played such a big role in bringing tourists to the region.

Biography

Ezekiel Straw

1819–1882

Caption:

Ezekiel Straw worked for the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company for nearly 50 years, and during that time he had a huge influence on the company, the city of Manchester, and the state of New Hampshire. He helped design the city of Manchester, with its wide main street, called Elm Street, and other streets in straight lines on a grid. He made sure there were public parks and land for schools, churches, and city government buildings. As the head of the Amoskeag company, Ezekiel traveled to Scotland and invited the best weavers to immigrate to Manchester and work for him. He also had the idea to make products other than textiles, like rifles and steam engines. In addition to running the Amoskeag company, Ezekiel helped found the waterworks, gas light company, and public library in Manchester. He also served as a state legislator and was elected governor of New Hampshire twice!

Biography

Frank W. Rollins

1860–1916

Caption:

Frank W. Rollins was governor of New Hampshire from 1899 to 1901. He is known for starting the tradition of Old Home Week when he was governor. He came up with the idea as a way to celebrate life in New Hampshire’s small towns, where most people lived by farming. Towns organized picnics, baseball games, parades, and dinners during Old Home Week and encouraged people who had moved away to come back and visit. The first Old Home Week was in 1899. Frank Rollins was also one of the founders of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. This organization still exists today. It works to conserve forest land and make sure it is used wisely. Rollins State Park on Mount Kearsarge is named after Governor Rollins.

Franklin Pierce

1804–1869

Caption:

Franklin Pierce was the 19th president of the United States and the only president from New Hampshire. He was born and raised in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, and later moved to Concord. He was a lawyer and a politician. Before he was elected president, he represented New Hampshire in the U.S. Congress. He also served in the U.S. Army in the Mexican-American War. He was president for one term, from 1853 to 1857. This was a very difficult time for the United States. There was a lot of tension between the North and the South over slavery. President Pierce thought it was more important to keep the country together than to abolish slavery. He tried to find a compromise between the two sides, but it did not work and made the problems worse.

Harriet Dame

1815–1900

Caption:

Harriet Dame was a famous Civil War nurse. She was born in Barnstead, New Hampshire, and later lived in Concord. When the Civil War began in 1861, she joined the Second N.H. Regiment as a nurse and caregiver. She cooked and sewed for the men, and if they were sick or wounded, she took care of them. Although many women served as nurses during the Civil War, Harriet Dame was different because she traveled with the soldiers and even went onto the battlefield to take care of them. It was dangerous and difficult work. Confederate troops captured her twice, but she was released both times. After the war ended, she was very active in veterans’ organizations. Harriet Dame was the first woman to have her portrait hung in the State House.

Harriet Wilson

1825–1900

Caption:

Harriet Wilson, from Milford, New Hampshire, was the first Black person to publish a novel in the United States. The book, Our Nig: Sketches from the Life of a Free Black, was published in 1859. The book is autobiographical, which means that the story was similar to Harriet Wilson’s own life. The main character, Frado, was the daughter of a Black man and a white woman. She had a very difficult childhood. She had to work for a cruel white family who treated her badly. Harriet Wilson wrote the book to explain that there was racism against Black people in the North. The book did not sell many copies when it was published, but it became famous many years later, long after Harriet Wilson had died. The word “Nig” in the title of the book is short for a longer word that is no longer used because it is offensive.

Hutchinson Family Singers

Caption:

The Hutchinson Family Singers were the most popular American singing group in the 1840s and 1850s. They were a group of siblings from Milford, New Hampshire, who traveled around the country singing together. There were 16 brothers and sisters in the family, but they did not all sing together at the same time. The Hutchinsons wrote a lot of their own songs, including “The Old Granite State,” which was about New Hampshire. They also sang songs about religion, the rights of factory workers, and women’s rights. They became especially known for songs that protested slavery and called for enslaved people to be set free.

Jeanne Shaheen

Jeanne Shaheen

1947–

Caption:

Jeanne Shaheen is the first woman elected governor of New Hampshire, the first woman elected U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, and the first woman in American history to be elected both a governor and a U.S. Senator. She was born in Missouri but moved to New Hampshire in 1973. She ran a small business and taught at Dover High School. Shaheen became active in politics, especially the New Hampshire primary. In 1990 she was elected to the New Hampshire Senate, and in 1996 she was elected governor. After serving three terms as governor, Shaheen ran for U.S. Senate in 2002, but she lost that election. She tried again in 2008, and that time she won. She was reelected to the Senate in 2014 and 2020.

Jeremy Belknap

1744–1798

Caption:

Jeremy Belknap wrote the first history of New Hampshire. He was born in Boston and studied at Harvard College. As a young man, he moved to New Hampshire and became a minister. He also loved to research and write about history. He traveled all over New Hampshire and studied its past. In 1784 he published the first part of the History of New Hampshire. He had done so much research and learned so much that it took two more books to tell the whole story! This was the very first history book written by an American. New Hampshire’s Belknap county is named after him.

Biography

John Langdon

1741–1819

Caption:

John Langdon was an American Founding Father and an important political leader from New Hampshire. He was an early supporter of independence from Great Britain. He served in the Continental Congress and led troops at an important American victory, the Battle of Saratoga. After the American Revolution, he was the second person to be elected governor of New Hampshire , which was then called “president.” Langdon was one of New Hampshire’s delegates to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. He supported a strong central government and campaigned in favor of ratification in New Hampshire. His efforts helped New Hampshire become the ninth and deciding state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. He was one of New Hampshire’s first U.S. senators, serving from 1789 to 1801. Later he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives and again as New Hampshire’s governor.

John Mason

1586–1635

Caption:

John Mason was an English investor who gave New Hampshire its name. A naval officer and businessman, Mason had been the governor of the British settlement of Newfoundland, on the coast of Canada. He realized how important the fur trade was, so he started a company based in New Hampshire to supply beaver furs for sale in England. The business was called the Laconia Company. Mason sent English settlers to build outposts along the Piscataqua River and the other rivers around what is now Portsmouth. Mason named this area New Hampshire after Hampshire County, where he lived in England. Mason was planning to move to New Hampshire, but he died before he could leave England.

John Parker Hale

1806–1873

Caption:

John P. Hale was an important political leader in New Hampshire in the 19th century. He was from Dover. Hale represented New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic Party, but he disagreed with the party about slavery. Hale believed that slavery was wrong and should not be allowed to spread. He was kicked out of the Democratic Party, but New Hampshire voters elected him to the U.S. Senate anyway. John P. Hale was the first U.S. senator to run for office as an abolitionist. Later he joined the new Republican Party, which was founded in New Hampshire in 1853. There is a statue of John P. Hale on the State House lawn and a portrait of him in Representatives’ Hall.

Biography

John Smith

circa 1580–1631

Caption:

John Smith was a famous English explorer. In 1607, he helped settle Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in North America. In 1614, he set out to explore the land north of Virginia. He named the area “New England.” He sailed all along the coast from Maine to Massachusetts. He stopped at some islands off the coast of New Hampshire and named them “Smith’s Isles” after himself. Today we call them the Isles of Shoals. He traded with the indigenous people for beaver pelts, which he brought back to England. He also brought back a lot of codfish. When he returned to England, he drew a map of the area and published a book about what he saw there. His stories of the natural resources and good climate in New England encouraged English settlers to move there.

John Stark

1728–1822

Caption:

John Stark is one of New Hampshire’s most famous military leaders. He was born in Londonderry. He was a farmer, hunter, and trapper. As a young man he was captured by Native Americans and spent about a year living with an Abenaki family in Canada, until he was sent back to New Hampshire. When fighting broke out between the patriots and the British in 1775, he raced to Massachusetts to defend the colonies. He fought in important battles like the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Battle of Trenton, where he helped George Washington. Stark was eventually promoted to general and in 1777 he led New Hampshire troops to victory at the Battle of Bennington. This victory helped save New England from a British invasion. Stark is still known as the “Hero of Bennington.” In 1809 he wrote a letter to some of the soldiers he had served with and used the phrase: “Live free or die; death is not the greatest of evils.” Those words, “Live free or die,” later became the state motto.

Biography

John Sullivan

1740–1795

Caption:

John Sullivan was a well-known general from New Hampshire during the American Revolution. After America won its independence, Sullivan became an important political figure in New Hampshire. In fact, he helped convince the people of New Hampshire to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788. Sullivan was born in Somersworth and became a lawyer when he was a young man. When Americans grew unhappy with being ruled by Great Britain, Sullivan supported the patriots. He even led the raid on Fort William and Mary in 1774, when patriots took control of a British fort in Portsmouth. When America and Britain began fighting the American Revolution, Sullivan became a general in the American army. After the American Revolution was over, he became one of New Hampshire’s first governors. When the people of New Hampshire were deciding whether or not to support the new U.S. Constitution, Sullivan used all his influence to convince them that the Constitution created a good system of government for the new country.

Biography

John Wentworth

1737–1820

Caption:

John Wentworth came from an old, wealthy New Hampshire family. His uncle, Benning Wentworth, was New Hampshire’s first royal governor. In 1767, John became New Hampshire’s second—and last—royal governor. He tried to keep the best interests of New Hampshire and its people in mind. But he was loyal to the king and tried to enforce the British laws, which made people angry. By the spring of 1775, New Hampshire patriots started ignoring Governor Wentworth, and he couldn’t do his job anymore. In the summer of 1775, he fled from Portsmouth with his wife and baby. He never returned to New Hampshire. During the war he lived in New York and then Canada, where he again was a royal governor.

John Wheelwright

circa 1592–1679

Caption:

John Wheelwright was an English minister who founded the town of Exeter, New Hampshire. In 1636, he emigrated with his family to Boston and began to preach there. He didn’t get along with the colonial authorities in Massachusetts Bay, though. They disagreed about religion, and the Massachusetts officials didn’t like what Wheelwright was preaching. Eventually he was banished from Massachusetts. Wheelwright, his family, and about 20 other families moved north to New Hampshire in 1638. They signed a deed, or a document, with the local Abenaki sachem, Wehanownowit, to buy a piece of land and build a town. They called the town Squamscott. Later it was called Exeter. Finally, the government of Massachusetts Bay pardoned Wheelwright, so he was able to go back to Massachusetts to live. Even though Wheelwright had left Exeter, the settlement was very successful and continued to grow.

John Winant

1889–1947

Caption:

John Winant was an important public official in the 20th century. He came to New Hampshire as a student at St. Paul’s School in Concord. He was a fighter pilot during World War I. At that time, airplanes were a recent invention. Winant then became governor of New Hampshire during the Great Depression. He wanted to help the people of New Hampshire who were suffering because they lost their jobs. He created government programs that helped people pay their bills and gave people jobs. Then he went to work for the federal government. President Roosevelt put him in charge of a New Deal program called Social Security. This program provides Americans with benefits if they lose their jobs and when they retire. During World War II, Winant was the American ambassador to Great Britain. An ambassador is the official representative of the American government to a foreign government. As ambassador, Winant worked closely with the British government to help win World War II.

Josiah Bartlett

1728–1795

Caption:

Josiah Bartlett was one of the three signers of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire. He was a doctor who lived in Kingston. Bartlett was a patriot and held secret meetings with other patriots in his attic. His house was even burned down once by people who opposed the patriots. He was on the N.H. Committee of Correspondence and was chosen to be in the Continental Congress. He was the second person to sign the Declaration of Independence. After the war, Bartlett continued to work as a doctor and even served as governor of New Hampshire at one point.

Kancamagus

unknown–circa 1690

Caption:

Kancamagus was an Abenaki warrior and the grandson of Passaconaway. He became the sachem of the Penacook people, a band of Abenaki, in the 1680s. Kancamagus had a different relationship with the English settlers than his grandfather had. During his lifetime, more and more English settlers were arriving. They took more of the Abenaki’s land and treated them badly. Kancamagus began to fight with the English. He led the attack on Dover that killed Richard Waldron. A few months later, the English kidnapped Kancamagus’s wife and children. Eventually, Kancamagus signed a treaty with the English, and his family was released. Many of his people moved north and west so they could live in peace. He probably died around 1690. Hundreds of years later, a mountain and a scenic road in the White Mountains were named after him.

Martin Pring

circa 1580–1626

Caption:

Martin Pring was the first English explorer to sail up the Piscataqua River in New Hampshire. He was only 23 years old in 1603 when he led an expedition to New England to find sassafras. Sassafras is a plant that people used as medicine. Pring and his crew explored the coast of Maine and then landed near what is now Portsmouth. They sailed 10 or 12 miles up the Piscataqua River. He didn’t find any sassafras there, though, so he continued south to Cape Cod. He found a lot of sassafras and met with the indigenous people who lived there. He sent a whole boatload of sassafras back to England, along with information about all of the plants and animals that he saw in New England. His reports helped convince English businessmen that they could make money by sponsoring settlements there. Pring continued to explore North America and Asia after this successful voyage.

Matthew Thornton

1714–1803

Caption:

Matthew Thornton was one of the three signers of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire. He was born in Ireland and immigrated with his parents to New England as a young child. He became a doctor and lived in Londonderry. He supported the patriots and was one of the first people to argue that America should not be a British colony. He helped write New Hampshire’s first constitution in January 1776 and was elected president of the New Hampshire Provincial Congress. In September 1776, he was chosen to be in the Continental Congress, and he signed the Declaration of Independence in November 1776. After the war, he was the first president of New Hampshire’s House of Representatives and a judge. He also operated a ferry, called Thorntons Ferry, that took people and goods across the Merrimack River.

Meshech Weare

1713–1786

Caption:

Meshech Weare was New Hampshire’s first governor. He is also sometimes called the “father of New Hampshire” because he played such an important role in creating the state government. When New Hampshire was an English colony, he represented the town of Hampton Falls in the colonial assembly. He supported American independence from the British Empire and helped write the N.H. Constitution of 1776 that declared New Hampshire’s independence from Great Britain. During the American Revolution, Weare was chief justice of New Hampshire’s highest court and the head of the Committee of Safety, which governed the state during the war. After the N.H. Constitution of 1784 was ratified, Weare was elected the first governor, which was then called “president.” The town of Weare is named after him.

Nathaniel Peabody Rogers

1794–1846

Caption:

Nathaniel Peabody Rogers was an important abolitionist from New Hampshire. That means that he worked to end slavery. He was from Plymouth, New Hampshire, and later lived in Concord. Nathaniel Rogers was a lawyer. As a young man he came to believe that slavery was wrong and should be abolished. He founded the first antislavery society in the state. Later he became the editor of an abolitionist newspaper, the Herald of Freedom. He wrote essays in the newspaper to try and convince people that slavery should end.

Neil Tillotson

1898–2001

Caption:

Neil Tillotson was a successful businessman. In 1954, he bought the Balsams, a big hotel in the town of Dixville Notch. The nearest voting place was over 50 miles away, so Tillotson worked to have the Balsams named as the voting place for Dixville Notch. He helped make famous the tradition of voting at midnight by inviting the media to the Balsams to witness the midnight vote. Dixville Notch was so small, with only about a dozen voters, that town officials counted the vote right after everyone voted at midnight. And as the town speaker, Tillotson himself always voted first! Then he would announce the election results to all the reporters gathered there who would broadcast the results to the whole country. How would it feel to have all those cameras watching you vote every four years?

Nero Brewster

Caption:

Nero Brewster was born in Africa. He was enslaved as a child and transported to New England. His enslaver was William Brewster, a tavern owner in Portsmouth who was involved in the patriot cause. It was common at that time for enslaved persons to use the last name of their owner. Nero Brewster was a leader in the African American community in Portsmouth, where he was known as “King Nero.” He was the leader of the group of enslaved men who sent a petition to New Hampshire’s government in 1779 asking for their freedom. When Brewster died in 1786, at the age of 75, he was a free man, but there is no record of when he was freed.

Nicholas Gilman

1755–1814

Caption:

Nicholas Gilman was one of New Hampshire’s delegates to the Constitutional Convention and a signer of the U.S. Constitution. He came from a prominent family in Exeter. He and his father were both early supporters of American independence from Great Britain. Gilman fought in the American Revolution and also served as New Hampshire’s treasurer during the war. In 1787, he was chosen to represent New Hampshire at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. He supported a strong central government and helped convince New Hampshire’s state convention to support the Constitution. In the first federal elections, Gilman was elected to represent New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served four terms and was later elected to the U.S. Senate.

Ona Judge

circa 1773–1848

Caption:

Ona Judge was born into slavery at Mount Vernon, George Washington’s estate in Virginia. When George Washington was elected president of the United States, Judge and seven other enslaved people traveled to Philadelphia, the first capital of the country, to work for the Washington family there. Judge was determined to seek her freedom. On a May evening in 1796 she left the president’s home in Philadelphia and made her way on board a ship that sailed for Portsmouth, NH. Judge lived in Portsmouth for a while, but someone recognized her and contacted the Washingtons. She moved to Greenland, NH, where it was a little safer for her. The Washingtons kept trying to get her back, but she was never recaptured. Judge married a free black man, John Staines, and had three children. She lived the rest of her life in New Hampshire, though she never became legally free. There are no portraits of Ona Judge, or of most enslaved people of that time.

Passaconaway

circa 1575–1665

Caption:

Passaconaway, also called "Papisseconawa," was the leader of the Penacook people, an Abenaki tribe living in the Merrimack Valley. He lived during the time of English exploration and settlement of the Abenaki homeland, called N’dakinna. The Penacook were part of a large and powerful group of Abenaki tribes, called a confederacy. Passaconaway was a very important and respected leader. The Abenaki believed that he had special powers, like being able to see the future, to control the weather, and to transform into the shapes of animals, like bears. His name means "child of the bear" in the Abenaki language. When the English arrived, Passaconaway encouraged the Abenaki to live peacefully with them. He believed this was the best way to keep his people safe and preserve their culture and way of life. It is hard to know exactly when he was born and exactly when he died, but legend has it that he lived to be 120 years old!

Philip Carrigain

1772–1842

Caption:

Philip Carrigain was an important person in New Hampshire in the early 1800s. He founded a newspaper, was a secretary of state, and wrote a poem called “The Granite State” that gave New Hampshire its nickname. He is most known for creating the “Carrigain map.” No maps of New Hampshire had been made since the American Revolution. There was a lot of land in the North Country that had never been mapped. And there were new towns popping up everywhere as more and more people moved to the state. Philip Carrigain convinced the state government that it was time for a new map. The state put him in charge of it. It was a long and complicated project, because each town’s map had to be drawn by hand. Then the maps had to be put all together into a single map. It took 13 years! Eventually, in 1816, it was finished, and a copy was given to each town in the state.

Prince Whipple

Caption:

Prince Whipple and his brother Cuffee were both born in Africa, enslaved as children, and sent to New England. Prince Whipple’s enslaver was William Whipple, a Portsmouth merchant who was a leader of the patriots in New Hampshire. It was common at that time for enslaved persons to use the last name of the slaveholder. Prince Whipple often traveled with William Whipple and was with him in Philadelphia when the Declaration of Independence was signed. He also fought alongside him during important battles of the Revolutionary War, like the Battle of Saratoga. He was one of the enslaved men who signed the freedom petition in 1779. In 1781, Prince Whipple married Dinah Chase, a free black woman, and in 1784, he was freed by William Whipple. Prince, his brother, and their wives Dinah and Rebecca lived in a house in Portsmouth where Dinah and Rebecca opened a school.

Ralph Baer

1922–2014

Caption:

Ralph Baer is known as the “father of the video game.” He was born in Germany but moved with his family to the United States in 1938. The Baers were Jewish and emigrated to escape the Nazis, the group that controlled Germany at that time. The Nazis persecuted Jewish people and took away all of their rights. In America, Baer studied television engineering, which was a new field at the time. He served in World War II and later moved to Manchester and began working at an electronics company. In 1966 he had the idea to add games to television sets. He invented a game system that he called the “Brown Box.” It was the first multiplayer video game system. The “Brown Box” was later sold as the Magnavox Odyssey. It looked very basic compared to the games you play, but it launched the whole gaming craze that is still going on today. There is a statue of Ralph Baer in Manchester.

Richard Waldron

1615–1689

Caption:

Richard Waldron was an important leader of the English settlement at Dover, New Hampshire. He damaged the relationship between the Abenaki and the English settlers. Waldron was born in England but emigrated to Dover, which was then called Cocheco, around 1635. He built the first sawmill in Dover, owned a lot of land, and had a lot of political power. He was also a merchant and traded with the local Abenaki, but he didn’t always provide them with the goods he had promised. In the 1670s there was a war between English settlers in Massachusetts and the Wampanoags, a Native American tribe who lived south of New Hampshire. Many Wampanoag people moved to the area around Dover to live with the Abenaki and escape the war. Waldron didn’t like having so many new Native Americans around. In 1676 he invited the Abenaki and the Wampanoags to a big party with food and games, but it was a trick. The Wampanoags were arrested, and many were sent to be slaves in the West Indies. The Abenaki were released and could go home, but they were very angry that Waldron had betrayed them. Many years later, during another war, the Abenaki attacked Dover and killed Waldron.

Robert Frost

1874–1963

Caption:

Robert Frost was a poet and one of the most famous writers to live in New Hampshire. Although he was born in California and grew up in Massachusetts, he lived part of his adult life in New Hampshire. He even taught English at Pinkerton Academy and Plymouth State University! Frost had two farms in the Granite State, one in Derry and one in Franconia. Many of his poems are about life on a farm in New Hampshire and the beauty of the state is. In 1923, he won his first Pulitzer Prize for a book of poetry called New Hampshire. The Pulitzer is a really important award for writers. Frost is the only poet to win four of them.

Robert Rogers

1731–1795

Caption:

Robert Rogers was New Hampshire’s most famous soldier during the French and Indian War. He commanded a group of New Hampshire men called Rogers’ Rangers. These soldiers were familiar with the forests and mountains of New Hampshire. They could blend into their surroundings without anyone hearing or seeing them. They also were good at surviving in the wilderness during all kinds of bad weather. Rogers’ Rangers even fought battles on snowshoes and ice skates. Robert Rogers wrote a book about these military strategies. Parts of this book are still used today by the U.S. Army Rangers, which are named after Rogers’ Rangers.

Sarah Josepha Hale

1788–1879

Caption:

Sarah Josepha Hale was one of the most famous women in America in the 19th century. She was born in Newport, New Hampshire. She wrote novels and poems, including “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” which became a popular nursery rhyme. Later she was the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, an important magazine that was read by women all over the country. Because of this job, Sarah Josepha Hale had a lot of influence. She spoke out against slavery and in favor of more education for women. She also persuaded President Abraham Lincoln to make Thanksgiving a national holiday.

Sebastian Cabot

circa 1474–circa 1557

Caption:

Sebastian Cabot was the first European explorer known to have visited New Hampshire. He was Italian but worked for the English king. His father was also a famous explorer! Cabot sailed to North America around 1508. He was hoping to find a water route around North America so he could reach Asia. He explored eastern Canada and then sailed down the New England coast. He did not get off his ship or explore the land. By the time Cabot returned to England, the king had died. The new king was not as interested in exploring, so Cabot went to work as a mapmaker. Later he worked for the king of Spain and explored South America.

Sherman Adams

1899–1986

Sherman Adams was the governor of New Hampshire during the 1952 primary. He was a friend of General Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower. He helped Ike win the New Hampshire primary that year on the Republican side. Then he traveled all over the country to help Ike win primaries in other states. After Ike became the president, Sherman Adams went to Washington, D.C. to work for him. Adams was the first “Chief of Staff” in the White House, which is the president’s top assistant. He organized all the people who worked for the president. What do you think that job was like?

Sylvester Marsh

1803–1884

Caption:

Sylvester Marsh was the inventor and founder of the Mount Washington Cog Railway. He was born in Campton, New Hampshire, but when he grew up, he lived in Boston and Chicago. He made his fortune by inventing machinery that allowed farmers to store grain. In 1857, Sylvester almost died when he and a friend got caught in a storm while climbing Mount Washington. It took him almost a decade, but he created a model for a special kind of railroad that could climb up steep mountains. Many people thought his invention would never work, and one critical man once called it Sylvester’s “railway to the moon.” Sylvester did manage to build the Cog Railway, though, the first one in the world. It remains one of the most popular White Mountain attractions, and thousands of people every year ride it to the top of Mount Washington.

Tasha Tudor

1915–2008

Caption:

Tasha Tudor was an illustrator and author of children’s books in the mid-20th century. She lived a rural lifestyle on a farm in Webster, New Hampshire, for many years. She washed clothes by hand, wove cloth, and cooked and baked from scratch. Her artwork often showed scenes of her farmstead and gardens and the animals and birds who lived there. Her stories were usually about farm life, seasons, or celebrations. She also loved corgi dogs and wrote several books about them. Tudor helped create a vision of New Hampshire that was rural and charming.

Thornton Wilder

1897–1985

Thornton Wilder was an important author of plays and novels. He was from California, but he spent time writing at MacDowell, an artists’ community in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Wilder’s play, Our Town, is one of the most popular plays in American history. It is about the importance of enjoying the simple moments of everyday life. Our Town is set in a fictional town in New Hampshire called Grover’s Corners. Grover’s Corners is based on Peterborough, because Wilder thought a small New Hampshire town best represented life in America.

Wehanownowit

Wehanownowit was the sachem of the Squamscott people, a band of Abenaki. During the summers, the Squamscott lived and farmed in the area around where the Squamscott and Exeter rivers meet. Several different bands of Abenaki used to meet in this area to fish for salmon. Unfortunately we do not have a lot of information about Wehanownowit, like when he was born and when he died. We do know that when John Wheelwright and his followers settled in the area where the Squamscott people lived, they wrote a deed, or legal document. The deed gave the English settlers the right to settle the land. It also said that the Squamscott people still had the right to hunt and fish there. Because he was the sachem, Wehanownowit signed the deed on behalf of the Squamscott people. He used a pictograph, or drawing of himself. We don’t know for sure what happened to Wehanownowit after the deed was signed. More and more settlers came to the town, which was eventually called Exeter. It was harder and harder for the Squamscott people to hunt and fish there. Wehanownowit and his people probably moved west to New York.

Biography

Wentworth Cheswill

1746–1817

Caption:

Wentworth Cheswill (sometimes spelled Cheswell) was an important citizen of Newmarket, New Hampshire, and a patriot during the American Revolution. He is thought to be the first Black person elected to public office in America. He was elected town constable, similar to sheriff, in 1768. He went on to serve as town clerk, selectman, moderator, and representative. During the American Revolution, Cheswill was on the Committee of Safety and traveled to Exeter to bring news back to Newmarket. He also fought at the Battle of Saragota. Cheswill's grandfather, Richard Cheswill, was an enslaved Black man who purchased his own freedom and then became the first Black person to buy land in New Hampshire.

Biography

William Whipple

1730–1785

Caption:

William Whipple was one of the three signers of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire. His father was a sea captain, and as a young man, Whipple went to sea as well, sailing back and forth between the Caribbean and New England, shipping wood, rum, and slaves. Later, he and his brother were successful merchants in Portsmouth. Whipple supported the patriots and was in the Continental Congress. He signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He was also a general in the New Hampshire militia and commanded troops at an important Revolutionary War battle, the Battle of Saratoga. After the war, he freed his slaves, including Prince Whipple. He also served in the New Hampshire legislature and on the Supreme Court of New Hampshire.
